Korea has a bilateral Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) agreement with the UK, offering Koreans aged 18–30 a 2-year open work visa for just £298 (approximately ₩520,000). The YMS allows you to work for any UK employer in any role — no job offer required. You must have savings of at least £2,530 to show financial self-sufficiency on arrival. Unlike the Australian WHV, the YMS does not require regional work for extensions, but it cannot be renewed — you must leave and apply for a different visa if you wish to remain.
The YMS is enormously popular with Koreans. London has one of the world's largest Korean communities outside of Korea, with major hubs in New Malden (Surrey), Soho's Korean restaurant strip, and Finchley Road. Korean culture is deeply embedded in London — Korean grocery stores (H Mart, Korea Foods), restaurants, K-pop merchandise shops, and cultural centres are abundant.
For longer-term professional employment, the Skilled Worker visa requires a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from a UK Home Office-licensed employer and a minimum salary of £26,200/year (or the going rate for your occupation, whichever is higher — many professional roles require £35,000–50,000+). Key points:
The Global Talent visa is available to exceptional talent in science, engineering, humanities, medicine, digital technology, arts and culture — endorsed by a relevant UK body (Royal Society, Tech Nation, etc.) with no salary threshold. The Scale-up visa is for employees of fast-growing UK companies. Korean professionals in finance, legal, and consulting often enter via the Skilled Worker route sponsored by major firms (KPMG, Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, Samsung UK).
To study in the UK you need a Student visa (formerly Tier 4). Your university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number which you use to apply. You must demonstrate English proficiency — typically IELTS Academic 6.0–7.0 (B2 on CEFR) — and show funds covering your first year's tuition plus £1,334/month for living costs in London (£1,023/month outside London). The visa application fee is £490 and processing takes approximately 3 weeks.
Korean students are a significant cohort at UK universities. The UK's Russell Group universities are extremely prestigious globally and highly valued in Korean corporate culture — a degree from Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, or UCL carries significant weight when returning to Korea.
| University | Annual Tuition (Intl) | Strong Subjects |
|---|---|---|
| University of Oxford | £28,000–38,000 | PPE, Law, Medicine, Sciences |
| University of Cambridge | £24,000–36,000 | Engineering, Natural Sciences, Mathematics |
| LSE | £23,000–26,000 | Economics, Finance, Social Sciences |
| Imperial College London | £30,000–38,000 | Engineering, Business, Medicine |
| University of Edinburgh | £20,000–28,000 | Medicine, Law, Business |
After completing a UK bachelor's degree or higher, graduates qualify for the Graduate visa — a 2-year open work permit (3 years for PhD graduates) with no salary restriction and no employer sponsorship required. This allows graduates to work, job hunt, and transition to a Skilled Worker visa once they secure a sponsored role. It is one of the most generous post-study work rights in Europe and a major draw for Korean students.
After 5 continuous years on a Skilled Worker visa (or other qualifying immigration routes), Korean nationals can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — the UK equivalent of permanent residency. Requirements include passing the Life in the UK Test (a 24-question multiple choice test on British culture, history, and law), meeting English language requirements (B1 CEFR), and the absence of a criminal record. The ILR application fee is £2,885 and processing takes 2–8 weeks via the super-priority service.
Years on the YMS count toward the 5-year total, making the YMS → Skilled Worker → ILR route one of the most popular for Koreans who start early with the working holiday.
After holding ILR for 12 months, you can apply for British citizenship by naturalisation. Requirements: 5+ years UK residence total, 12 months ILR, no more than 90 days outside UK in the final year, Life in the UK Test pass, English B1+ proficiency, good character. British citizenship permits holding dual nationality — you do not need to renounce Korean citizenship. A British passport provides visa-free access to 190+ countries and is one of the world's most powerful travel documents.
Korean nationals with a UK-born grandparent can apply for a UK Ancestry visa — a 5-year visa leading directly to ILR. For those married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen, the Family visa provides a route to ILR after 5 years (or 2.5 years on the partner visa plus 2.5 years further leave to remain).
Since January 2024, Korean passport holders visiting the UK for tourism or short-term business must obtain a UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) before travel. The ETA costs £10 (approximately ₩17,000) and is applied for via the UK ETA app or GOV.UK website. It is linked to your passport and valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, allowing multiple entries of up to 6 months each stay. Processing is typically within minutes but can take up to 3 working days — apply before booking your flight.
Direct flights from Incheon to London Heathrow (LHR) take approximately 12 hours on Korean Air, British Airways, and Asiana. London Gatwick and Manchester are also served from Incheon with connections.
New Malden in southwest London is widely considered the largest Korean community in Europe — with Korean supermarkets, restaurants, churches, schools, and community organisations. Central London's Soho has a dense concentration of Korean BBQ and hot pot restaurants along Tottenham Court Road and Denmark Street. The Korean Cultural Centre UK in London W1 hosts regular events, exhibitions, and Korean language classes.
Budget £100–200/day for comfortable travel; London is one of Europe's most expensive cities. The Oyster card and National Rail provide convenient transport across London and between cities.
