Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)

New Zealand's primary work visa is the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), introduced in 2022. The employer must be accredited with Immigration New Zealand. The job must meet or exceed the median wage of NZD 29.66/hour (NZD 61,693/year). Roles below the median wage require additional proof that no New Zealanders are available. The AEWV is valid for up to 3 years (or 5 years for high-wage roles). Indian IT professionals, healthcare workers, and engineers are among the most common AEWV applicants. Processing takes 4–8 weeks once employer accreditation is in place.

Green List — Direct Pathways

New Zealand's Green List identifies occupations with acute shortages and offers two tracks:

Straight to Residence — Green List

For occupations on the Green List Straight to Residence track, you can apply directly for permanent residence without first spending years on a temporary work visa. Indian doctors (GPs, specialists), nurses with registration, and certain engineers can use this track. Requirements: a job offer in NZ at or above the applicable median wage, relevant qualifications, and registration with the NZ professional body (Medical Council of NZ, Nursing Council of NZ, etc.). Registration processes take 3–12 months — plan ahead.

New Zealand Citizenship

After holding NZ permanent residence for 5 years (and being physically present in NZ for at least 1,350 days in those 5 years), you can apply for NZ citizenship. Fee: NZD 470. New Zealand permits dual citizenship — Indian nationals can retain their Indian passport and OCI card. New Zealand passport holders have visa-free access to 185+ countries including the UK, EU, USA, and Japan — significantly more powerful than the Indian passport. The NZ citizenship application process is straightforward with no language test required beyond basic demonstration of English.

Practical Travel Tips

New Zealand is a long-haul destination from India — flights take 14–18 hours, typically connecting through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, or Sydney. Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, and Qantas are common carriers. Auckland is the main international gateway; Queenstown, Christchurch, and Wellington are other entry points. New Zealand has strict biosecurity rules — declare all food, plant material, and outdoor equipment on arrival. The NZD–INR exchange rate makes NZ moderately expensive for Indian tourists (approximately NZD 1 = INR 52–55).
